Temporary Signs Help Businesses

Temporary Signs Help Businesses

In Alexandria, Va., on Tuesday, the City Council unanimously approved the extension of a program placing movable A-frame signs in the busy Old Town shopping district. ISA staff started working with Alexandria officials on this issue in late 2008, around the time that the U.S. economy faltered and communities started looking for ways to help local retailers. Since the Old Town area sees mostly foot traffic, increasing the use of these temporary signs made sense to community leaders. The City Council’s decision ensures that Alexandria remains one of many areas across the country that have loosened restrictions on sidewalk signs and banners to help shore up businesses struggling to survive a recession that has slowed consumer spending and reduced municipal tax revenue.
