Tips for Hiring and Recruiting

For several years now, ISA member companies have told us that finding and attracting the best talent is a challenge, and for good reason. Without good employees, sign, graphics and visual communications companies can't grow. Competition is intense and not just in our industry. We're competing with other types of manufacturers for welders, electricians, sales personnel and administrative staff. There is a limited talent pool, and the battle is intense. Some companies have told us they have challenges getting people to show up for scheduled interviews or worse, the first day of work. What do you do?  Here are some tips to keep in mind.  

Be Competitive.  In order to attract candidates a competitive salary is important, but never underestimate the power of benefits as they can have a significant impact on a potential candidate;s decision to join your company.  In small businesses, benefits send important signals about stability and culture.  Utilize ISA's recently updated Wage & Benefits Report to benchmark your company and find data on pay, benefits and raises.    

Hire Fast.  Had experience with new hires not showing up for their first day of work?  Have a position you have had to replace multiple times?  The more time it takes to interview and hire, the more options your qualified candidate has to accept another job.  Get your candidates on the phone and in for an interview quickly.  

Interview and Choose with Success.  Start with a phone interview.  You can gain a lot of information in a short, 15-minute call.  Throughout the process, make sure to share the positives about the job as well as the challenges.  Always be transparent and make sure it is a good fit both ways – this will save money and time in the long run.
