"The greatest way our industry can support African Americans in our industry is by building awareness of the numerous opportunities to individuals that are not within the industry. To be a part of multi-billion dollar industry that impacts well beyond marketing and branding for businesses is special. The industry touches every facet of our daily lives from providing directions for everywhere we travel all the way to assisting individuals with disabilities. Prior to me joining the sign industry, I had no idea of the opportunities for varying levels for individuals that range from skilled labor jobs all the way up to ownership of a company.
There are vast opportunities in multiple areas of the industry including manufacturing, supply chain, drafting and design along with engineering. To support the aforementioned disciplines, substantial roles exist for individuals including electrical assembly, welding/fabrication, creative design (including 3D printing) and general assembly. Additionally, there are significant leadership and management opportunities. The most significant opportunities come with the prospect of business ownership in industry as the industry is full of family-owned 2nd and 3rd generation companies.
In closing, I am excited and encouraged with the opportunities the sign industry could present to the African American community. To begin make a measurable difference, it starts with building awareness. Building awareness begins with partnering with the African American Entrepreneurs Association, Inc., facilitating relationships with universities and community colleges with strong African American presence and uniting with vocational schools to create awareness for African Americans in the sign industry which will facilitate increased opportunities."
